In a digital world, we rarely have to wait. Having been granted a Guggenheim fellowship in 1974, Eggleston received an additional career boost two years later with a solo exhibition at New York City’s Museum of Modern Art.

William Eggleston’s 300 Leicas Born in Memphis on July 27, 1939, and raised in Sumner, Mississippi, Eggleston acquired his first camera, a Canon rangefinder, in the early 1950’s. In the early 1970s Eggleston discovered that printing with a dye-transfer process, a practice common in high-end advertising, would allow him to control the colours of his photographs and thereby heighten their effect. In the 1980s he traveled extensively, and the photos in the monograph The Democratic Forest (1989), set throughout the United States and Europe, proceeded from his desire to document a multitude of places without consideration for traditional hierarchies of meaning or beauty.

‘Eggleston’s photographs often seem to have been taken not by a photographer but by a motorized camera swinging around the photographer’s head on … Eggleston’s other publications include Los Alamos (2003), a collection of pictures taken in 1966–74, many of them on road trips. The early photographers particularly those that used larger format or Speed Graphic did not have the luxury (maybe time but money was an issue) to take too many shots of each scene. If I could trade my eyes in for a dofferent pair, I would like one of Bruce Gildens eyes for Black and white photographs and one of Mr Egglestone for color photographs.

I have never been to Memphis, but… After settling in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1964, Eggleston began to experiment with colour photography, which, in part because of its association with both amateur snapshots and commercial work, had rarely been appreciated as fine art. (Its curator, John Szarkowski, had taken an interest in Eggleston’s work upon meeting him nearly a decade earlier.)

William Eggleston, the Pioneer of Color Photography A visit with the artist reveals him to be every bit as brilliant, confounding and heartbreakingly soulful as the pictures he makes. As a note, I was surprised to learn that Eggleston takes one exposure of the scene he sees and moves on. Among his first photographs to employ the technique were a stark image of a bare lightbulb fixed to a blood-red ceiling (1973) and those compiled in 14 Pictures (1974), his first published portfolio. Stephen Shore is, I believe, the heir to Eggleston despite his use of LF. Exposure to the vernacular style of Walker Evans and, especially, the compositions of Henri Cartier-Bresson influenced his earliest work, which he produced in black and white. Sensing an opportunity to forge new ground, he set to capture images he encountered in his surroundings with a neutral eye—devoid of either sentiment or irony—and, radically, in full colour. I can appreciate the simplicity of the subjects he chooses but some seem so bland. Check out the photograph above (larger version here).

A photographer whose work fetches millions of dollars at auction? In all, I love the images for their use of color and the careful composition and their call to study the contents of the frame. Over the next decade, he produced thousands of photographs, focusing on ordinary Americans and the landscapes, structures, and other materials of their environs; a representative example, from 1970, depicts a weathered blue tricycle parked on a sidewalk.

THAT is confidence in the statement of is vision. In addition to standard issue models, the stockpile also includes rare limited-edition and custom-painted bodies.

His work was credited with helping establish colour photography in the late 20th century as a legitimate artistic medium.

You can see in the picture above, one of the three cases he customized and retrofitted along with a woodworking friend from a leather briefcase bought at a Memphis shop. The show provoked hostility from some critics, notably Hilton Kramer, who judged the snapshotlike pictures banal and lacking in artistry. They were all working in B&W but the ideas and issues that inform their work come from Eggleston.
